A recent film song “why this kolaveridi”?
This is a song written in impure Tamil , adulterated further with improper English. The song is all about a man who has been rejected in love. He is one who has been “dumped”, “ditched” or you can call it anything. This song has created waves by being the most popular on YOUTUBE , has been lapped up by the masses and is now also creating condemnation all around.
We have enjoyed many slapstick shows; we do not mind Tamil songs interspersed with English phrases but there is a loud protest at actor DHanush for murdering Tamil. One person from Yazhpanam has used the same tune to compose another song criticizing the “kolaveri” song.
Would this song have been condemned so much if it had failed to appeal to the masses? I am a strictler for purity of language be it any lanuage. However, these are times where youngsters have made a language of their own and are using it as spoken language. They take worse liberties with the English language and the Tamil used is definitely not literary Tamil. I am however certain that no man in his senses would ever prescribe this as a part of any syllabus . If we can accept “youhuuuu and leyoo leyo as part of a song why can this not just be taken in a lighter vein? No one seemed to have protested at ‘uppu karuvaadu ,oora “vecha” soru” saying it was not pure Tamil. Pure Tamil can only accept “vaitha” and not “vecha”. This is just one example and Tamil cinema would abound in such examples these days. If listeners do not object to these rural dialects this can also be treated as a dialect of youngsters.
Why should people condemn it so much?
Is it man’s fundamentally basic jealousy coming to the fore or is it a genuine need to propagate pure Tamil the world over? Then how do we account for the different dialects and words and phrases used in Tamil that frequently border on obscenity?
